Policy and External Affairs Director

The CIWM is the leading chartered membership body representing the resources and waste sector, impacting the broad spectrum of resource efficiency, waste management and the circular economy with the aim of supporting the world to move beyond waste.

The CIWM has an immense depth of expertise within the resources sector, and is looking to further develop its services to support membership and the wider community by recruiting a Policy and External Affairs Director.

This role will play a pivotal role in determining the strategic development, management and delivery of the CIWM’s policy, technical and knowledge capability.  You will help to raise engagement internally and externally with a range of stakeholders, decision makers and corporations.  At the heart of the role is the strategic planning, development and dissemination of policy and technical thinking.

Technically, candidates will need to demonstrate strategic and analytical thinking, with an ability to synthesise complex policy and technical information.  You will be outstanding verbal and written communicators, who are able to share information to a broad spectrum of audiences.  You must be able to build and maintain strong partnerships and relationships with stakeholders, as well as internal members of the CIWM.

From a behavioural perspective, alignment with the CIWM core values is imperative. As part of the leadership team your responsibility extends beyond your own department to cover the entire organisation and a collaborative mindset is required to reflect this reality. You will engage, guide, and support all areas of the business, ensuring opportunities are maximized and the strategic vision of the organisation is achieved. The CIWM has undergone a significant amount of change within the last couple of years and will continue to evolve to ensure it keeps pace with the wider evolution of the sector. This requires an adaptive, creative, and driven mindset that is focused on continuous improvement, the development of new ideas and openness to change.

We are keen to speak with candidates who have a broad and detailed understanding of the resources sector.  It is essential that you have a track record in developing and delivering effective communications, policy and external affairs strategies.  We would expect you to have project, time and budget management experience.

This is a hugely exciting role, that will be at the forefront of planning and strategy within the resources sector over the coming years.  You will have a key voice in determining and shaping the sector for years to come.
